Dragging a text selection in $Text pane from the text pane (or stand-alone window) and dropping it onto the view pane results in a new note being created:
- The dropped text selection is used as both $Name and $Text of the new note. The source text remains unaffected, e.g. the dragged text is not removed, re-styled, or linked.
- Application focus remains on the source note.
- No links are created (unlike when to making footnotes).
- The major view's focus shifts to the newly created note.
- Dropping on a Map view:
- The note is created at the drop point
- Dropping onto (into) a map icon viewport results in no note being created (not a note being created on the child map as might be supposed).
- Dropping on an Outline or Chart view:
- Onto the general background, the note is added as first sibling of the current root level notes.
- If dropped over the right part of a note title the black position arrow will indicated whether the new item will be created before, after or as a child of the item under the cursor, i.e. the same behaviour as drag re-arranging notes in Outline view.
- Dropping onto an Treemap view:
- Onto the general background, the note is added as first sibling of the current root level notes.
- Other view types may or may not support this feature.
Using text from $Name
It is also possible to drag a text selection from the $Name value displayed at the top of the text pane. The result is the same as described above for a drag from $Text.
Note: it is not possible to attempt this dragging a selection from a note title in edit mode in the view pane. Use the text pane instead.
Also consider using Tinderbox footnotes
If a link to/from the source text in $Text (only—not for $Name text), consider using Tinderbox's built-in footnote creation feature.
