Outline, and some other views such as Chart and Attribute Browser, show an icon to the left of the selected note.
There are a number of easily observed differences:
- $Text content. If the note, or agent, has any text content ($Text) the icon is taller. In addition, lines inside the box indicate the amount of content (see more detail here).
- Note vs agent. If the object is an agent, the thicker bar is at the bottom, as with Map view container title position. For notes and container notes, the thinker bar is at the top. Again this accords with Map view container styling.
- Item vs. container. If an item in the outline has has child notes, it shows a 'disclosure triangle'. Clicking on that latter expands/collapses the container's contents. Agents also use a 'disclosure triangle', if they have any matches. As an agent can only contain aliases (whose titles are in italics), an agent container only has children. By comparison, as illustrated, a normal container can contain other containers—i.e. further descendants.
- Clicking a disclosure triable does not affect the current selection. This allows investigation of an outline without losing the current (selected) context.
- Nested containers can be expanded and collapsed separately from each other. Containers store their own last expansion state, regardless of whether they are currently within collapsed containers higher in outline level. thus if the shown 'A container note' collapsed, 'A child note' still knows its own container should be expanded if its parent is re-expanded.
- Links. If a note has either or both inbound and outbound links, that is indicated by stub arrows. One or more inbound links result in right-pointing arrow on the left side of the icon. One or more such outbound links result in a right-pointing arrow on the right of the icon
- Link widget (selected item only). Clicking this and dragging to another note or a link parking space creates a basic link.
- Badges. An optional badge ($Badge) is displayed if set. For selected items with no badge set a plus sign in a circle is displayed. Clicking this opens the Badge picker pop-over.
- Separators (outline only). These never show an icon, link widget or badge, regardless of selection state.
